How the Morning Dew Collection Is Made
We are often asked about our process, and we are always glad to describe it because we think transparency about craft is part of what makes handmade work meaningful.
Most of our botanical pieces begin outdoors. We gather plants seasonally — spring and early summer for flowers, late summer and early autumn for grasses, seed heads, and dried berries, winter for structural elements like bare branches and evergreen sprigs. We keep a studio garden specifically for this purpose, and we forage carefully in local meadows, hedgerows, and woodland edges during seasons when doing so does not disrupt plant populations or wildlife.
Once gathered, plants are processed according to what they will become. Plants destined for pressing are laid flat between layers of botanical paper and blotting card, weighted, and left in a dry, well-ventilated space. Larger plant material for arrangements and wall hangings is hung upside down in small bundles in our drying room, a warm, airy space that smells extraordinary from about June through November.
From there, making begins. Jewelry pieces are composed on a lightbox, where we can see the translucency of pressed botanicals and arrange them with tweezers to get the balance right before they are fixed. Resin work is poured in multiple layers, with botanicals placed between pours to achieve different depths. Framed pieces are composed on acid-free backing paper, with every element positioned and repositioned until the composition feels resolved. Home décor pieces are assembled by hand, with stems trimmed and wired as needed and every element chosen for how it contributes to the whole.
The final step in most of our pieces — and perhaps the most important one — is simply looking. Before anything is packaged and sent out of the studio, it is set aside and looked at again, fresh, with the kind of attention you hope whoever receives it will bring to it. We ask ourselves whether it is finished. Sometimes the answer is no, and it goes back to the bench. When the answer is yes, we wrap it.

Those decisions accumulate into something that feels different from an object that has never required that kind of attention from another person.
We also think there is something important about the relationship between handcraft and the natural world specifically. Plants are not uniform. Every fern frond is different from every other fern frond. Every pressed flower flattens differently, reveals different veining, settles into a slightly different color.
